Growing Guide for White Cabbage

When to Sow?

White cabbage (including savoy cabbage) is typically sown from March (under cover) to June for a harvest between August and December. Late and hardy varieties can be sown directly in open ground in May-June.

💡 Tip: Check the product information to choose the best variety and sowing period for early (summer) or late (winter/spring) harvests.

Germination

🌡️ Temperature: Ideally 20°C.
❄️ Cold Treatment: Can speed up germination but is not essential.
💧 Soaking Seeds: Promotes uniform and faster germination but is optional.
Duration: Germination takes 6 to 10 days.

Transplanting and Thinning

✂️ Thinning: Once the first leaves appear, thin out to 5 cm apart.
🌱 First Transplant: When seedlings have 3-4 leaves, transplant to the nursery at 10 cm spacing.
🌿 Final Transplant: In June-July, once plants have 6-8 leaves, transplant them into open ground with 80 cm spacing.

White Cabbage Cultivation

Soil: Rich in organic matter, well-drained, with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH.
🌍 Climate: Prefers temperate climates, frost-resistant but sensitive to extreme heat.
📅 Growth: Ideal for autumn and winter harvests, depending on the variety.

Harvesting and Storage

Harvesting

✔️ Harvest from late summer to winter, depending on sowing time.
✔️ Cabbage is ready when firm and well-formed.
✔️ Cut at the base with a sharp knife, leaving some outer leaves for protection.

Storage

🧊 Cool Storage: Fresh cabbages keep for several weeks in a cool, humid place (cellar or fridge).
