Product description

Seeds of White Cabbage "Quintal d'Alsace"

The White Cabbage "Quintal d'Alsace" is an ancient French variety from Strasbourg, known for its high yield, winter hardiness, and late harvesting time. This cabbage is perfect for making mashed potatoes or sauerkraut, and is a great choice for colder climates due to its resistance to frost.

Cultivation Advice for White Cabbage

Sowing Time and Conditions
White cabbage seeds can be sown from March to June. For early harvesting, sow under cover in March. Late and frost-hardy varieties can also be sown directly outdoors in May or June. It's essential to know that ideal sowing and harvesting times vary by variety, so always consult the product information.

Germination and Treatment
Germination Temperature: 20°C
A cold treatment can speed up germination, but it is not necessary. Soaking the seeds may lead to faster and more even germination, but again, this is optional. Germination typically takes 6 to 10 days.

Pricking Out and Transplanting
Pricking Out: Once the seedlings develop their first leaves, thin them to a distance of 5 cm.
Transplanting: When the seedlings have 3 to 4 leaves, transplant them in the nursery with a 10 cm distance. Transplant again in June/July into the open ground, leaving 80 cm between the plants.

Cultivation Conditions
White cabbage thrives best in moderate climates and prefers soils rich in organic material, well-drained, with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. While it does not tolerate extreme heat well, it is highly frost-resistant.

Harvesting and Storing
Harvesting usually occurs at the end of summer or in the fall. Wait until the cabbage is firm and well-formed before harvesting. Cut the cabbage off with a sharp knife, leaving a few outer leaves for protection during storage. After harvesting, white cabbage can be stored for several weeks in a cool, moist place such as a cellar or refrigerator.

Diseases and Pests
White cabbage is susceptible to diseases like clubroot, powdery mildew, and black rot. Common pests include flea beetles, cabbage butterflies, and aphids. Protect your crops by practicing crop rotation, using protective nets, removing infected plant debris, and choosing resistant varieties. Encourage natural predators and avoid overwatering to prevent infections.

Tips
If the cabbage is not fully formed, it can survive the winter and be harvested in the following spring. Sow in June for the best chance.
