Product description

Tomato green from Huy

The Tomato green from Huy is an old and rare tomato variety from the Huy region in Belgium. This early variety produces round, smooth, green-yellow fruits with very aromatic, juicy, soft, and sweet flesh once fully ripe. Its indeterminate growth makes it ideal for cultivation in open ground.

Tips for Growing the OrganicTomato green from Huy: Sowing, Transplanting, and Care

Sowing and Transplanting:
Start sowing Tomato green from Huy seeds at a constant temperature of at least 20°C (preferably 24°C) between mid-February and early April, about 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting into open ground. Ensure a warm, moist, and light environment by regularly spraying lightly to support seedling growth.

After germination, transplant the seedlings with 2 to 4 leaves into pots, where the temperature should be between 15°C and 20°C. Once the seedlings are large enough, plant them 50 x 80 cm apart in open ground, after April 15 under glass or once the last frost has passed outdoors. In northern regions, such as above the Loire, it is recommended to grow under glass, but you can also grow outdoors in well-lit and ventilated areas.

Care and Pruning:
For indeterminate varieties like the Tomato green from Huy, prune the shoots that grow in the leaf axils to encourage the formation of high-quality fruit. This ensures that the plant's energy goes to the fruit rather than excessive leaf growth. For determinate varieties, pruning is not necessary, but adding mulch and using supports can help the plant.

Disease Prevention and Care:
The Tomato green from Huy requires warmth and organic matter, particularly potassium (K), for healthy growth. When planting, bury a significant portion of the stem to encourage strong root development, leading to a robust and healthy plant.

In northern regions, light pruning is recommended to prevent leaves from touching the ground, which helps prevent rot and diseases.

Tomatoes are susceptible to mildew, so it is essential to water regularly without getting the leaves wet. As a preventive measure, you can use nettle manure or horsetail decoction to help the plant defend against fungal diseases. Using powdered seaweed, such as lithothamne, can also be effective.

The Pur'Mel 3 fertilizer is an excellent choice due to the synergy of nettle, comfrey, and horsetail. Dilute the mixture with 10% water as a preventive measure and spray the leaves every two weeks. If mildew is present, dilute it with 30% water and spray the leaves twice a week until the disease is gone.

Harvesting the Tomato green from Huy

This early variety is harvested approximately 2 months after planting. Ripe tomatoes will easily fall off the plant, indicating that they are ready for harvest.
