Product description

Andean Tomato

The Andean Tomato is an heirloom, highly productive variety with elongated, red fruits resembling large peppers. This meaty tomato contains few seeds and has a rich flavor. It thrives best under shelter, as it is sensitive to excessive moisture at the end of the season. A mid-season variety, it has indeterminate growth and produces fruit over an extended period.

Growing Guide: Sowing, Transplanting, and Maintenance

Sowing
Start seeds indoors at a constant temperature of 20-24°C (68-75°F) from mid-February to early April, around 6-8 weeks before transplanting outdoors. Maintain a warm, humid, and well-lit environment, misting lightly to prevent drying out.

Transplanting
When seedlings develop 2-4 leaves, transplant them into pots, keeping the temperature between 15-20°C (59-68°F). After April 15th, plant them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed. In colder regions (north of the Loire), growing under glass is recommended for optimal yield.

Maintenance

  • Pruning: For indeterminate varieties, remove side shoots to promote fruit quality over quantity. For determinate varieties, pruning is unnecessary, but mulching and staking help support growth.
  • Feeding: The Andean Tomato requires warmth and nutrient-rich soil, particularly potassium (K). Bury a significant part of the stem when planting to encourage strong root development.
  • Watering: Water regularly at the base, avoiding wetting the leaves to prevent fungal diseases.

Disease Prevention

  • Use natural boosters like nettle manure and horsetail infusion to protect against fungal diseases.
  • Powdered seaweed (lithothamne) can strengthen the plant.
  • To prevent mildew, dilute Pur'Mel 3 fertilizer at 10% and spray the foliage. In case of an outbreak, increase the concentration to 30% and spray twice a week.

Harvest and Tips

The Andean Tomato is a mid-season variety, ready for harvest about 2.5 months after planting. Ripe fruits detach easily. This tomato is not only a delicious addition to your meals but is also rich in vitamins and minerals, contributing to a healthy diet.
