Product description

Tomato Roma

The Tomato Roma, also known as plum tomato or pomodoro, is a popular variety originating from the United States. This elongated tomato has a firm texture, low moisture content, and few seeds. With its naturally sweet flavor and low acidity, the Roma tomato is perfect for making pasta sauces, soups, stews, and salads.

Growing Tips for Tomato Roma: Sowing, Transplanting, and Care

Sowing and Seedling Growth

Sow tomato seeds between mid-February and early April, in a warm environment with a constant temperature of at least 20-24°C (68-75°F). Ensure proper lighting and maintain light soil moisture by misting regularly.

Once seedlings develop 2 to 4 leaves, transplant them into larger pots while keeping the temperature between 15-20°C (59-68°F) with sufficient sunlight.

Transplanting into Open Ground

After April 15, plant young tomatoes in a greenhouse or transplant them outdoors after the last frost. Maintain a spacing of 50 x 80 cm (20 x 31 inches). In cooler regions, like north of the Loire, greenhouse cultivation is recommended, but Roma tomatoes can also thrive in sunny, sheltered, and well-ventilated areas.

For indeterminate varieties, remove side shoots (suckers) to direct the plant’s energy toward fruit production. Determinate varieties do not require pruning but benefit from mulching and support.

Care and Disease Prevention

  • Nutrition & Soil: Roma tomatoes require warmth and potassium-rich fertilizers for optimal growth. Bury part of the stem during planting to encourage strong root development.
  • Watering: Water regularly but avoid wetting the foliage to prevent fungal diseases like mildew.
  • Natural Disease Prevention: Use nettle manure, horsetail decoction, or powdered seaweed (lithothamne) to strengthen plants against fungal infections.
  • Organic Fertilizers: Pur'Mel 3 (a blend of nettle, comfrey, and horsetail) is an effective fertilizer. Use a 10% solution as a preventive spray, increasing to 30% if mildew appears.

Harvesting Roma Tomatoes

Roma tomatoes are a mid-season variety and are ready for harvest approximately 2.5 months after planting. Ripe tomatoes detach easily from the plant and can be stored fresh or processed.

Additional Tips & Benefits of Roma Tomatoes

Nutrient-rich: High in vitamins A, C, and K, plus lycopene, an antioxidant that promotes good health.
Low moisture & seeds: Ideal for making thick tomato sauces without additional reduction.
Easy to grow: Suitable for both open-field and greenhouse cultivation and well-adapted to warmer climates.

With proper care, you’ll enjoy a summer full of delicious, juicy Roma tomatoes straight from your own garden! 🌿🍅
