Product description

Tomato Roem van Mechelen

The Roem van Mechelen is an old Belgian tomato variety originating from the 1930s. This highly productive tomato plant produces round, smooth red fruits of medium size. The fruits have a slightly floral, juicy texture and are aromatic with a mild, non-acidic flavor. As a mid-season variety with indeterminate growth, the Roem van Mechelen is ideal for both hobby gardeners and experienced tomato growers.

Growing Tips for the Organic and Reproducible Roem van Mechelen Tomato

  • Sowing: Start sowing the Roem van Mechelen tomato seeds indoors between mid-February and early April. Maintain a constant temperature of at least 20°C, preferably 24°C. Keep the environment warm, moist, and lightly misted to ensure healthy growth.

  • Transplanting: Once the seedlings have 2 to 4 leaves, transplant them into pots, keeping them in a warm environment (15-20°C). Plant them outdoors in the ground at a spacing of 50 x 80 cm after April 15, or once the last frost has passed. Tomatoes grow best under glass, especially in northern regions, though they can also be grown outdoors in sunny, well-ventilated locations.

  • Pruning: For indeterminate varieties, prune the shoots growing from the leaf axils to encourage the formation of high-quality fruits rather than increasing quantity. For determinate varieties, avoid pruning and instead use mulching and support.

Maintenance and Disease Prevention for Roem van Mechelen Tomatoes

  • Root Development: Roem van Mechelen tomatoes require warmth and organic matter for optimal growth. When planting, bury a large portion of the stem to promote root development.

  • Pruning and Watering: In cooler regions, lightly prune the plants to prevent leaves from touching the ground. Water regularly, avoiding wetting the foliage as tomatoes are highly susceptible to mildew.

  • Disease Prevention: To prevent fungal infections, spray plants with nettle or horsetail broth or seaweed powder (lithothamnium) to strengthen them against cryptogamic diseases.

  • Pur'Mel 3 Fertilizer: A highly effective way to nourish your tomatoes is using Pur'Mel 3 fertilizer, which combines nettle, comfrey, and horsetail. Dilute the fertilizer with 10% water for prevention and spray the leaves every two weeks. For mildew infestations, dilute with 30% water and spray twice a week until the disease subsides.

Harvesting Roem van Mechelen Tomatoes

The Roem van Mechelen is a mid-season variety that is ready for harvest approximately 2.5 months after planting. Ripe tomatoes will fall off the plant easily when they're ready to be picked.

Health Benefits of Roem van Mechelen Tomatoes

The Roem van Mechelen tomatoes are rich in nutrients, vitamins, and minerals such as vitamin C, potassium, and lycopene. These nutrients help support a strong immune system, a healthy heart, and protect the body from UV radiation.
