Product description

Tomato Red of Names

The Tomato Red of Names is an old Belgian tomato that is becoming increasingly rare. This early variety produces a round, red fruit with light ribs, similar to the popular Marmande type. The tomato has indeterminate growth and is well-suited for open-field cultivation.

Why Grow the Tomato Red of Names?

  • Rare and unique: This variety is becoming harder to find and offers an authentic Belgian taste.
  • Early harvest: Ideal for those who want to enjoy ripe tomatoes quickly.
  • Easy to grow: It grows well in the open field, even in cooler climates.

Steps for Growing theTomato Red of Names:

1. Sowing the Seeds

Start sowing the Rood van Namen tomato seeds from mid-February to early April. Use a constant temperature of at least 20°C, preferably around 24°C. This encourages quick germination. Ensure a warm, humid, and well-lit environment and lightly mist the seeds regularly to maintain moisture.

2. Transplanting the Seedlings

After germination, transplant the seedlings with 2 to 4 leaves into separate pots. Keep the temperature between 15°C and 20°C. Ensure that the seedlings have enough space to develop. Finally, plant them 50 x 80 cm apart in the soil, after April 15, or once the risk of frost has passed.

3. Pruning and Support

For indeterminate tomato varieties, such as Tomato Red of Names, it's essential to prune the side shoots in the leaf axils. This promotes the formation of quality fruit rather than excessive plant mass. Provide adequate support, such as stakes or tomato cages, to keep the plants upright.

Care and Disease Prevention for the Tomato Red of Names

  • Nutrient and warmth requirements: Tomato Red of Names needs organic material and plenty of potassium (K) to grow well. When planting, bury part of the stem in the ground to stimulate root development.
  • Light pruning is recommended for northern regions to prevent the leaves from dragging on the ground and causing rot.
  • Watering: Water regularly, but avoid wetting the foliage, as tomatoes are highly susceptible to powdery mildew.

Natural Disease Prevention

Use natural methods for disease prevention:

  • Nettle tea or horsetail decoction can help strengthen the plant against fungal diseases.
  • Lithothamnium powder (seaweed) can also be beneficial as a preventive measure.
  • Pur'Mel 3 fertilizer: A highly effective organic fertilizer combining nettles, comfrey, and horsetail. Dilute it with 10% water for prevention and spray the foliage about every two weeks. In case of powdery mildew, dilute it to 30% and spray the leaves twice a week until the disease is gone.

Harvesting the Tomato Red of Names

The Tomato Red of Names is an early variety and is ready for harvest about 2 months after planting. Ripe tomatoes fall off the plant easily when fully mature.

Health Benefits of the Tomato Red of Names

Tomato Red of Names is not only a delicious tomato, but it’s also an important source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. These nutrients can help improve your health by strengthening your immune system and promoting healthy digestion.
