Product description

Tomato Prune noire

The Prune Noire is a very productive black tomato variety from Russia, known for its exceptional flavor and excellent resistance to cracking. This brown-black, elongated tomato (similar to a plum) has a firm texture and a soft, slightly tangy taste. The Prune Noire is a mid-season variety with indeterminate growth, ideal for gardening in various climates.

Growing the Prune Noire Tomato: Sowing, Transplanting, and Maintenance

  1. Sowing: Start sowing the seeds of the Prune Noire tomato in a warm environment with a consistent temperature of at least 20°C, preferably 24°C. This can be done from mid-February to late March or early April, about 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting into the ground. Ensure a light, humid environment by regularly misting to help the seeds germinate.

  2. Transplanting: After germination, transplant seedlings with 2 to 4 leaves into pots at a warm temperature of 15-20°C. When the seedlings are large enough, plant them in the ground with a spacing of 50 x 80 cm, after April 15 (under glass) or after the last frost outdoors. If you live north of the Loire, it's recommended to grow under glass.

  3. Pruning: For indeterminate tomato varieties like Prune Noire, prune the shoots that grow in the leaf axils. This promotes the production of high-quality tomatoes rather than just quantity. Consider using a mulch layer and support for better growth.

Prune Noire Tomato Maintenance and Disease Prevention

  • Care: Prune Noire tomatoes need warmth and organic matter, particularly potassium (K). It is advisable to bury a large portion of the stem when planting to promote root development.

  • Disease Prevention: Tomatoes, including Prune Noire, are susceptible to powdery mildew. Regularly spray the plants without wetting the foliage. Preventively, you can use nettle liquid or horsetail broth to strengthen the plant against fungal diseases. Lithothamne (seaweed powder) can also help improve disease resistance.

  • Pur'Mel 3 Fertilizer: This ready-made fertilizer is particularly effective for promoting healthy growth. Dilute the fertilizer to 10% in water and spray the leaves every two weeks. In case of a mildew infection, increase the concentration to 30% and spray the leaves twice a week until the disease is gone.

Harvesting the Prune Noire Tomato

The Prune Noire tomato is a mid-season variety and is harvested approximately 2.5 months after planting. Ripe tomatoes detach easily from the plant. Enjoy the unique flavor and high yield!
