Product description

Tomato Pineapple

The Pineapple tomato is a very old variety from the United States. These tomatoes grow to an impressive size, with fruits weighing up to 1 kg. They have a distinctive yellow color with red veins and firm flesh that resembles the texture of a pineapple. The flesh is highly flavorful with few seeds, making this tomato a true delicacy. The Pineapple tomato grows indeterminately, making it an ideal choice for gardeners seeking a unique and flavorful tomato.

Tips for Growing the Organic Pineapple Tomato: Sowing, Transplanting, and Care

  1. Sowing Tips: Start by sowing the seeds of the Pineapple tomato at a consistent temperature of at least 20°C, ideally around 24°C. Begin sowing between mid-February and early April (6 to 8 weeks before transplanting into the ground). Ensure a warm, humid, and well-lit environment by misting the seeds regularly to promote optimal growth.

  2. Transplanting: After germination, transplant the seedlings with 2 to 4 leaves into pots at temperatures between 15°C and 20°C. Eventually, plant the seedlings in the ground with a spacing of 50 x 80 cm, after April 15th under glass or outdoors once the last frost has passed. In colder regions, such as north of the Loire, it is recommended to grow the Pineapple tomato under glass for better yields.

  3. Care: For indeterminate varieties like the Pineapple tomato, it's essential to prune the shoots growing in the leaf axils to promote the formation of large, flavorful fruits instead of excessive leaf growth. Use mulch to protect the soil and guide the tomato plants effectively.

Pineapple Tomato Disease Prevention and Maintenance

Tomatoes require warmth and organic substances, especially potassium (K). When planting, bury a large portion of the stem to promote root growth and provide the plant with additional nutrients.

In northern regions, lightly prune the plants to prevent the leaves from touching the ground. Regularly mist the plants without wetting the foliage, as tomatoes are highly susceptible to mildew. Prevent fungal diseases by spraying with nettle liquid or horsetail infusion. Seaweed powder can also help prevent cryptogamic diseases.

Another option for disease prevention is using Pur'Mel 3 fertilizer. Dilute the fertilizer with 10% water as a preventive measure and spray the plants every two weeks. In case of mildew infection, increase the dilution to 30% and treat the foliage twice a week until the disease is gone.

Harvesting the Pineapple Tomato

The Pineapple tomato is a late-ripening variety and can be harvested about 3 months after planting. Ripe tomatoes will easily detach from the plant, indicating they are ready for harvest.

Health Benefits of the Pineapple Tomato

The Pineapple tomato is an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. This tomato is rich in vitamin C, which is beneficial for the immune system, and potassium, which helps maintain healthy blood pressure. Enjoy this nutritious, flavorful tomato that not only tastes great but also contributes to a healthy diet!
