Growing Advice for Winter Giant Spinach

Sowing Spinach

  • Spring varieties: Sow in March-April.
  • Autumn varieties:
    • Sow between August 15 and early September for a first harvest in autumn (pick only large leaves) and a second harvest in spring.
    • Sow between September 15 and October 15 for a spring harvest.
  • Sow directly outdoors in rows with 25 cm spacing.

Growing Spinach

Spinach thrives in well-prepared, moist but well-drained soil, rich in humus. It is sensitive to drought and heat, which can trigger premature seed formation. A partially shaded spot is ideal for spring cultivation.

  • Thin seedlings to 5 cm when they have 4-5 leaves.
  • Water regularly and abundantly.

Harvesting Spinach

  • Spinach is ready for harvest about two months after sowing. Winter varieties are harvested in spring.
  • Frequent and partial harvesting encourages new growth.

Spinach Diseases and Pests

Spinach is prone to fungal diseases such as mildew. Preventative measures include:

  • Crop rotation and proper spacing for good air circulation.
  • Using organic plant boosters like nettle or horsetail infusion as a preventative or curative measure.
  • Protecting young plants from slugs and snails.

Best and Worst Companion Plants for Spinach

✔ Pairs well with beans, peas, broad beans, cabbage, radishes, garlic, onions, leeks, and strawberries.
🚫 Avoid planting near tomatoes, beets, potatoes, chard, and peppers.

Health Benefits of Spinach

Spinach is packed with essential nutrients:

  • Rich in vitamins A, C, E, and K, as well as minerals like iron and calcium.
  • High in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.

Additional Tips

A pre-soaking or cold treatment can help with germination but is not essential.
