Growing Guide for Shallot Longor

Soil Requirements

Shallots thrive in various soil types as long as the soil is well-drained. In heavy or poorly drained soil, raised beds are recommended to prevent root rot.

Planting

  • Plant the bulbs at a depth of 2 to 3 cm, leaving 20 cm between plants and 25 to 30 cm between rows.
  • Ensure the tip of each bulb is just above the soil surface.
  • If the soil is dry at planting time, water lightly to encourage root development.

Care

  • Loosen the soil regularly to improve aeration and drainage, especially in heavy clay soil.
  • In open ground, watering is usually unnecessary, except in prolonged dry spells during planting.
  • Under cover, weekly watering is recommended.

Harvesting and Storage

  • Early harvest: Young shallots can be harvested in early summer but do not store well.
  • Full maturity harvest: Shallots are ready when the leaves start to wither and dry, usually in late summer or early autumn.
  • Drying: Allow harvested shallots to dry on the ground for a few days before storing.
  • Storage: Keep shallots in a cool, dry, and dark place. Properly dried shallots can be stored for several months.

Companion Planting

Shallots grow well alongside carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, and strawberries. They are less compatible with legumes, so it is best to avoid planting them together.

With proper care, the Longor shallot provides a bountiful harvest that stores well!
