Sanguisorba minor, also known as small pimpernel or bloodwort (due to its bleeding properties), is an evergreen, pole-forming herb or perennial. The leaves are composed of 6 to 10 elliptical, coarsely serrated blue-green leaflets. Sanguisorba minor blooms from May to July with brown-red flowers in spherical spikes. It prefers a position in the sun or half-shadow and preferably a calcareous, well-drained soil. It is quite hardy, fairly drought-tolerant, tolerant of salt and sea wind, can handle some air pollution and is not affected by diseases or pests.
