Product description

Climbing Pea ‘Blauwschokkers’ – Decorative Variety with Purple Pods

The Blauwschokkers climbing pea is a highly decorative variety of shelling peas. It produces numerous deep purple pods with tender, melting peas inside. It can also be harvested and eaten as a snow pea. The round seeds and pink-lilac flowers add to its ornamental appeal. Height: 2 m.

Growing Tips for Climbing Pea ‘Blauwschokkers’

Sowing

Sow in rows with 50 cm spacing, placing one seed every 2-3 cm at a depth of 2 cm. Direct sowing in small clusters is also possible from March to late April for a June-July harvest, or in July for an October harvest.

If necessary, cover with a tunnel (optimal germination temperature: 15°C-18°C during the day and 10°C-7°C at night). However, peas are frost-resistant, and their foliage can withstand temperatures as low as -10°C.

Care and Maintenance
  • Peas prefer loose, moist, and deep soil. Hoe regularly and water, especially in the early weeks.
  • Thin seedlings to 20 cm apart.
  • Hill up plants when they reach 15 cm high, then support them with branched sticks, trellises, or wire mesh.
  • Even bushy varieties benefit from support to ease harvesting and prevent rotting in wet conditions.
  • Ensure consistent watering—mulching helps retain moisture and freshness in the soil.
Harvesting
  • Snow peas are usually harvested 70 to 100 days after sowing.
  • Shelling peas should be harvested when the peas are fully developed, about 3 months after sowing.
Common Pests and Diseases
  • Peas are susceptible to powdery mildew. To prevent it, avoid wetting the leaves while watering. Spraying with horsetail manure can be used as a preventive or curative treatment.
  • Slugs can be an issue early in the season, and birds may target seeds during sowing.
Tips for a Successful Crop
  • A cold treatment or soaking seeds before sowing can enhance germination but is not essential.
