Product description

Potimarron Red Kuri

The Potimarron Red Kuri is a large, highly productive pumpkin variety that produces medium-sized, top-shaped, orange-red fruits. These pumpkins have a fine, slightly rough skin that is easy to handle. The flesh is of excellent quality: dark yellow, sweet, and has a delightful chestnut flavor. This makes the Red Kuri pumpkin an ideal choice for various culinary applications such as gratins, bread, puree, soup, soufflés, pies, and jam. Additionally, this pumpkin stores well, allowing you to enjoy the harvest for an extended period. The Potimarron Red Kuri is also an easy pumpkin to grow, even for beginner gardeners.

Growing Tips for the Potimarron Red Kuri

Sowing Instructions

For an early harvest, sow the Red Kuri pumpkin indoors in pots at a temperature of 20°C in March or April. This speeds up fruit formation and protects the plants from pests. After the last frost (usually around May 15), you can transplant the seedlings outdoors into the ground. Ensure that there is at least 1 meter of space between the plants, and for creeping varieties, this can be up to 2 meters. Dig small holes filled with compost to plant the pumpkins.

You can also choose to sow the pumpkins directly into the ground in May, but keep in mind that the harvest will be later and the yield may be lower.

Care for the Potimarron Red Kuri

The Red Kuri pumpkin requires a sunny location and soil rich in organic material. Make sure the plants receive regular watering, especially during dry periods. Using mulch helps to keep the soil moist and protects the roots from extreme temperatures. Pruning is not necessary but can help keep the plants healthy.

Harvesting

Harvest takes place at the end of the season when the leaves begin to wilt and the stem feels dry. For the best storage options, harvest the pumpkins as late as possible (but always before the first frost). Allow the harvested pumpkins to sit outside in the sun for a day (protected from rain and cold) to let the skin dry properly. Then store the pumpkins in a dry, well-ventilated indoor location.

Helpful Tips for Growing the Red Kuri Pumpkin

  • Pumpkin seeds need warmth (20-22°C) to germinate properly. Be sure not to overwater the seeds, as excess moisture can cause the seedlings to rot.
  • Sometimes, a healthy and blooming plant may not produce fruit. This can be caused by a lack of pollination, for example, by the absence of pollinating insects. Be sure to plant flowers that attract pollinators.
  • Another cause may be a shortage of female flowers, which often happens due to extreme heat. This heat affects both the production of female flowers and the quality of male flower pollen.
  • During hot weather, you can further protect your pumpkin plants by mulching or providing shade.
