Cultivation Advice for Mixed Radish Sowing Radishes Sow:

  • From February to September for early varieties (under tunnel at the start of the season).
  • From March to September for varieties that can be sown year-round.
  • From May to August for winter varieties.

Sow in rows with 25 cm spacing. Cover with 1-2 cm of light soil. Thin out to 3-5 cm to promote root development. Sow every 15 days to ensure continuous production.

Growing Radishes Ensure light, fertile soil that remains cool and shady in the summer. Excessive heat and dryness will result in very spicy radishes. Water regularly; although radishes are robust, they can suffer from drought.

Diseases and Pests of Radishes The short growing period of radishes makes them less susceptible to various fungal diseases. Generally, practices like crop rotation, proper spacing, and regular soil moisture should be followed to minimize risks.

In addition to birds and slugs, radishes may be affected by flea beetles (altises). Using cover material offers good protection, as well as planting in shaded areas. In case of an infestation, spraying the leaves with cold water can help deter flea beetles, as they prefer heat and dryness.

Harvesting Radishes Radishes can be harvested 4 to 6 weeks after sowing. Radishes that remain in the ground past full maturity will become spicier.

For early varieties and those that can be sown year-round, harvesting is possible from April to November.

For winter varieties, harvesting occurs from September to December. Winter radishes store well in the cellar, while others should be consumed quickly to enjoy them at their best.

Companion Planting with Radishes Carrots, peas, beans, cabbage, spinach, and lettuce are excellent companions for radishes. Avoid planting onions and cucumbers nearby. Note that chervil, when planted close, can enhance the spiciness of radishes.

Health Benefits of Radishes Radishes offer several health benefits. They are rich in vitamin C, which boosts the immune system and enhances resistance. They also contain fiber that aids digestion and can assist in detoxifying the body due to their cleansing properties.

Semailles Tips & Tricks:

  • Sow round varieties close to the surface (1 cm deep), while half-long and long varieties can be sown deeper (between 1.5 and 3 cm deep).
  • Sow every 2 weeks to ensure a harvest throughout the season.
  • Water regularly and harvest radishes early to avoid them becoming too spicy.
  • To protect radishes from flea beetles, use yellow sticky traps to attract them or insert gorse branches into the row.
