Product description

Sora Round Red Radish – Versatile and Crisp

A radish variety suitable for all months. It has a round root with a bright red color and firm flesh.

Growing Advice for Sora Round Red Radish

Sowing:

  • February to September for early varieties (under cover at the start of the season)
  • March to September for year-round varieties
  • May to August for winter varieties

Sow in rows with 25 cm spacing. Cover with 1-2 cm of light soil. Thin out seedlings to 3-5 cm apart to encourage root development. Sow every 15 days for continuous production.

Cultivation:
Radishes prefer light, fertile soil that remains cool and shaded in summer. Excessive heat and drought can make radishes very spicy. Water regularly, as radishes are hardy but sensitive to drought.

Pests and Diseases:
Radishes have a short growing cycle, making them less susceptible to fungal diseases. Good crop rotation, spacing, and consistent soil moisture help minimize risks.

Apart from birds and slugs, radishes may be affected by flea beetles. Covering the crop or providing shade can offer protection. Spraying leaves with cold water can deter flea beetles, as they thrive in heat and dryness.

Harvesting:
Radishes are ready for harvest 4 to 6 weeks after sowing. If left too long in the ground after maturity, they become increasingly spicy.

  • Early and year-round varieties can be harvested from April to November.
  • Winter varieties can be harvested from September to December.

Winter radishes store well in a cellar, while others should be consumed quickly for the best flavor.

Companion Planting:
Good companions: carrots, peas, beans, cabbage, spinach, and lettuce.
Avoid: onions and cucumbers.
Chervil planted nearby can intensify radish spiciness.

Health Benefits:
Radishes are rich in vitamin C, supporting the immune system and overall health. They also contain fiber, aiding digestion and detoxification.

Tips from Semailles:

  • Sow round varieties near the surface (1 cm deep); half-long and long varieties can be sown deeper (1.5–3 cm).
  • Sow every two weeks for a continuous harvest.
  • Water regularly and harvest young radishes to prevent excessive spiciness.
  • To protect against flea beetles, use yellow sticky traps or place broom branches in the rows.
