Half-long variety, scarlet red with a white tip.

Growing Advice for Radish Flamboyant 3

Sowing:

  • From February to September for early varieties (under tunnel at the start of the season)
  • From March to September for varieties that can be sown throughout the year
  • From May to August for winter varieties Sow in rows with a spacing of 25 cm. Cover with 1-2 cm of light soil. Thin to 3-5 cm to promote root development. Sow every 15 days to ensure continuous production.

Growing Radish: Ensure light, fertile soil that remains cool and shaded in the summer. Excessive heat and dryness can result in very spicy radishes. Water regularly, as radishes are robust but can suffer from drought.

Diseases and Pests of Radish: The short growing season makes radishes less susceptible to fungal diseases. Generally, follow rotation principles, ensure adequate space, and maintain regular soil moisture to minimize risks.

In addition to birds and slugs, radishes can be affected by flea beetles (altise). A cover material or shaded areas will provide good protection. In case of an infestation, spraying the leaves with cold water can deter flea beetles, as they prefer heat and dryness.

Harvesting Radish: Radishes can be harvested between 4 and 6 weeks after sowing. Radishes left too long in the ground after full maturity will become increasingly spicy.

  • Early varieties and those that can be sown year-round can be harvested from April to November.
  • Winter varieties can be harvested from September to December. Winter radishes store well in a cellar, while others should be consumed quickly.

Companion Planting with Radishes: Radishes are good companions with carrots, peas, beans, cabbage, spinach, and lettuce. Avoid onions and cucumbers. Note that chervil, if planted nearby, can enhance the spiciness of radishes.

Health Benefits of Radish: Radishes are rich in vitamin C, which strengthens the immune system and boosts resistance. They also contain fiber, which aids digestion and helps detoxify the body.

Tips from Semailles: Sow round varieties close to the surface (1 cm deep), while half-long and long varieties can be sown deeper (between 1.5 and 3 cm deep).

Sow every 2 weeks to ensure a harvest throughout the season.

Water regularly and harvest radishes early to prevent them from becoming too spicy.

Use yellow sticky traps for flea beetles or insert broom twigs into the row for protection.
