Radish Cherry Belle – A Year-Round Favorite

A radish variety for all months "to force," with a round root and a bright red color. Firm white flesh. Very good flavor quality.

Cultivation Tips for Radish Cherry Belle
Sowing Radish:
Sow:

  • From February to September for early varieties (under tunnel at the beginning of the season)
  • From March to September for year-round varieties
  • From May to August for winter varieties
Sow in rows with a 25 cm spacing. Cover with 1-2 cm of light soil. Thin out to 3-5 cm to encourage root development. Sow every 15 days for continuous production.

Cultivating Radishes:
Ensure light, fertile soil that remains cool and shady in summer. Excessive heat and drought will make radishes too spicy. Water regularly; while radishes are hardy, they suffer from dryness.

Radish Diseases and Pests:
The short growing season makes radishes less susceptible to various fungal diseases. In general, principles of rotation, spacing, and consistent soil moisture should be observed to minimize risks.

In addition to birds and snails, radishes can be affected by flea beetles (altises). Covering and shaded areas will offer good protection. In case of an infestation, spraying leaves with cold water can deter the flea beetles, as they prefer warmth and dryness.

Harvesting Radishes:
Radishes can be harvested 4 to 6 weeks after sowing. If left too long in the ground after full ripening, they become spicier.

  • For early varieties and varieties that can be sown year-round, harvest from April to November.
  • For winter varieties, harvest from September to December. Winter radishes store well in the cellar, while others should be consumed quickly for the best flavor.

Radish Companion Planting:
Good companions: Carrots, peas, beans, cabbage, spinach, and lettuce.
Avoid: Onions and cucumbers.
Note: Chervil, if planted nearby, can enhance the spiciness of radishes.

Health Benefits of Radishes:
Radishes offer several health benefits. They are high in vitamin C, which strengthens the immune system and boosts resistance. They also contain fiber that aids digestion and have detoxifying properties that help cleanse the body.

Semailles Tips & Tricks:
Sow round varieties near the surface (1 cm deep), while half-long and long varieties can be sown deeper (1.5–3 cm deep).

Sow every 2 weeks to ensure a harvest throughout the season.

Water regularly and harvest radishes early to prevent them from becoming too spicy.

To protect radishes from flea beetles (altises), you can use yellow sticky traps that attract the beetles or insert broom twigs in the rows.
