Cultivation Tips for Winter Radish Black Round
Sowing Radish
Sow:

  • From February to September for early varieties (under tunnel at the start of the season)
  • From March to September for varieties that can be sown year-round
  • From May to August for winter varieties
Sow in rows with a 25 cm gap. Cover with 1-2 cm of light soil. Thin out to 3-5 cm to promote root development. Sow every 15 days to ensure continuous production.

Sowing Radish
Ensure light and fertile soil that stays cool and shaded in summer. Excessive heat and dryness will result in very spicy radishes. Water regularly, as radishes are robust but affected by drought.

Diseases and Pests of Radish
The short growing season of radishes makes them less susceptible to various fungal diseases. In general, rotation, spacing, and regular soil moisture should be maintained to minimize risks.

Besides birds and snails, radishes can be affected by flea beetles (altise). Covering materials will provide good protection, as will shaded areas. In the event of a pest attack, spraying the leaves with cold water can deter flea beetles as they prefer heat and dryness.

Harvesting Radishes
Radishes can be harvested between 4 and 6 weeks after sowing. A radish left too long in the ground after full ripening will become increasingly spicy.

For early varieties and varieties that can be sown year-round, harvest is from April to November.

For winter varieties, harvest is from September to December. Winter radishes store well in the cellar, while others should be consumed quickly to fully enjoy them.

Companion Planting of Radish
Carrots, peas, beans, cabbage, spinach, and lettuce are good companions for radishes. Avoid planting onions and cucumbers nearby. Note that chervil, when planted close, can increase the spiciness of radishes.

Health Benefits of Radishes
Radishes offer several health benefits. They are rich in vitamin C, which strengthens the immune system and boosts resistance. They also contain fiber that promotes digestion and can aid in detoxifying the body due to their cleansing properties.

Semailles Tips & Tricks

  • Sow round varieties near the surface (1 cm deep), while half-long and long varieties can be sown deeper (between 1.5 and 3 cm).
  • Sow every 2 weeks to guarantee a harvest throughout the season.
  • Water regularly and harvest radishes at a young age to prevent them from becoming too spicy.
  • To protect radishes from flea beetles, use yellow sticky traps that attract the beetles or insert broom twigs in the row.
