Pepper 'de la Bresse' – Early and Distinctive Variety

The 'de la Bresse' pepper is an old, early-ripening variety from l'Ain. Its small, round fruits have firm flesh and a distinctive flavor with mild heat (4/10 on the Scoville scale).

Growing Pepper 'de la Bresse' – Step-by-Step Cultivation Guide

Sowing and Seedling Care

Sow indoors in February or March at a constant temperature of at least 23-24°C. Maintain a warm and humid environment with sufficient light and regular watering. Some pepper varieties, including this one, may require higher temperatures (above 25°C) for successful germination.

Once seedlings have developed 3-4 true leaves, transplant them into pots. After the last frost, they can be planted outdoors, preferably in a sheltered location. Like tomatoes, the stem can be buried up to the first leaf to promote additional root formation.

In cooler regions (north of the Loire), this pepper grows best in a greenhouse. However, if the summer is warm and not too humid, it can also thrive outdoors in a sunny, well-ventilated spot, such as along a wall.

Cultivation and Care
  • Soil: Use well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Enrich with compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist with regular watering, avoiding prolonged dry periods that may affect growth and fruit quality.
  • Pruning and Support: In northern regions, the main stem can be trimmed above the last fruit once the plant has around ten fruits to concentrate its energy on existing fruit. Pinch off side branches with fruits, leaving only two leaves after the last fruit. Taller plants may require support.
  • Feeding: Fertilize during the growing season with organic fertilizers or foliar sprays such as diluted nettle manure (e.g., PurMel 3).
Disease Prevention

Powdery mildew is a common threat to pepper plants. To prevent this disease:

  • Practice crop rotation to maintain healthy and balanced soil.
  • Avoid wet leaves by watering at the base of the plant.
  • Ensure good air circulation by spacing plants appropriately.
  • Strengthen plants with a spray of nettle manure or horsetail decoction.
  • Use seaweed powder as a natural preventive measure.
Harvesting and Usage

Harvesting occurs from July to October, about 5-6 months after sowing. Green fruits can be picked during growth, but for optimal flavor and ripeness, wait until they reach their final color (orange or red). These peppers are perfect for fresh use or drying for long-term storage.
