Peper Numex Twilight – Growing Guide

The Numex Twilight pepper is a late-ripening and very spicy variety (8/10 on the Scoville scale) with a compact growth habit. The small fruits, only 1 to 2 cm in size, undergo a spectacular color change: from deep purple to yellow, then orange, and finally red. This colorful ripening cycle makes the plant not only productive but also highly decorative. Dried peppers can be stored for a long time.

How to Sow Numex Twilight Pepper

Sow indoors between February and March at a constant temperature of at least 23-24°C.

Create a warm, humid environment with sufficient light and regular watering. Some pepper varieties require more heat to germinate. If germination does not occur, increase the temperature slightly (above 25°C) to stimulate the process.

When the seedlings have 3-4 true leaves, transplant them into pots. After the last frost, they can be planted in the open ground, preferably in a sheltered location. Like tomatoes, the stem can be buried up to the first leaf to encourage strong root development.

In colder regions, such as north of the Loire, peppers grow best in a greenhouse. However, they can also be cultivated outdoors in a warm, well-ventilated area, such as against a sunny wall, provided summers are not too humid.

Growing and Care

Pepper plants thrive in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility.

Keep the soil evenly moist by watering regularly. Prolonged drought can negatively affect fruit quality and yield.

In cooler regions, it is advisable to prune the main stem once the plant bears about ten fruits. This helps the plant focus its energy on ripening existing fruits rather than producing new ones. Also, pinch back fruit-bearing side shoots to two leaves after the last fruit.

Some varieties grow tall and may require staking for support.

During the growing season, feed the plant with organic fertilizers or foliar sprays, such as diluted nettle manure (e.g., PurMel 3).

Preventing Diseases

Powdery mildew is a common issue for pepper plants. To prevent it, follow these steps:
✔ Practice crop rotation to keep the soil healthy and balanced.
✔ Water at the base of the plant and avoid wetting the leaves.
✔ Allow enough space between plants for good air circulation.
✔ Strengthen plants with nettle manure or horsetail decoction.
✔ Use seaweed powder as a natural protection.

Harvesting Numex Twilight Peppers

The harvest period runs from July to October, about 5-6 months after sowing. Green peppers can be picked early, but the fruits are fully ripe when they stop growing in size. Orange and red peppers have reached their peak flavor and heat at this stage.
