This small, round white onion has upright, dark green leaves and is perfect for eating raw. Slice it finely as a side dish for salads, omelets, fresh cheeses, and other dishes. It adds a fresh and sharp flavor to any recipe.

Seed Advice for Successful Onion Cultivation

  • Sowing Time: Sow the onion directly in the ground from March to April.
  • Spacing: Sow the seeds in rows, spaced 25 cm apart.
  • Covering: Lightly cover the seeds with about 1 cm of soil.
  • Thinning: Thin the seedlings to 8 cm after 2.5 months, and again to 10 cm a few weeks later.
  • Green Shoots: Don’t discard the green shoots! They’re delicious as an addition to salads.

Maintenance Tips

  • Soil: Choose a light, well-draining soil and a sunny location.
  • Weeding: Regular weeding is crucial, especially at the start of the growing season, to allow the plants to develop properly.
  • Watering: Water moderately in the beginning of the season and only during severe drought later on.

Diseases

  • Onions are particularly susceptible to downy mildew.
  • Prevention: Apply well-rotted manure and spray regularly with horsetail decoction.
  • Onions need a light, fertile, well-drained soil. Choose a sunny spot and avoid overly moist soil.

Harvesting

  • Harvest Time: From late July to September.
  • Encouraging Ripening: Bend the stems to the ground in August to stop growth.
  • Storage: Let harvested onions rest on the ground for 48 hours (in dry weather) before storing them in a dry, well-ventilated place (e.g., hanging). This way, they can be kept for several months.

Companion Planting

  • Good companion plants for onions include carrots (which act as a repellent against onion flies), tomatoes, beets, lettuce, and strawberries.
  • Avoid legumes and other plants that add nitrogen to the soil.

Health Benefits

  • Onions are a nutritious vegetable with numerous health benefits, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and cardiovascular effects.
