Tips for Planting and Caring for Your Onions

✔ Soil and Location
Onions thrive in loose, well-draining soil in a sunny location. If the soil is heavy and clayey, consider planting in raised beds to improve drainage.

✔ Planting
Plant from late February to mid-April, or in autumn for varieties suitable for fall planting, such as the Shakespeare onion. Place the onion sets 2 to 3 cm deep, with 10 cm spacing and 25 to 30 cm between rows. Ensure the tip is just above ground level. If the soil is dry at planting time, water lightly to encourage growth.

✔ Maintenance
Keep the soil aerated by regularly loosening it, especially in clay soil. In open ground, additional watering is usually unnecessary unless there is a prolonged drought. In protected cultivation, weekly watering is recommended.

✔ Harvesting and Storage
Harvest onions from late July to September. To speed up ripening, bend the stems slightly around August to stop growth. Let the harvested onions dry on the ground for about 48 hours in dry weather, then store them in a dry, well-ventilated place—hanging them is a good option. This way, they can be stored for several months.

✔ Companion Planting
Onions grow well alongside carrots (which deter onion flies), as well as tomatoes, beets, lettuce, and strawberries. Avoid legumes and other nitrogen-fixing plants, as they can hinder onion growth.

With these tips, you'll enjoy a successful onion harvest!
