Slightly flattened onion with excellent storage quality

This dark copper-brown onion has a slightly flattened shape and is excellent for long-term storage. It can be sown directly or propagated through shoots for later transplantation.

Successful onion cultivation – our tips

Sowing

• Sow onions directly in open ground in March-April, in rows 25 cm apart.
• Cover the seeds lightly (about 1 cm deep).
• Thin out seedlings to 8 cm spacing after 2.5 months, then again a few weeks later to 10 cm.
• Don't discard the young green shoots – they are delicious in salads!

Care

• Choose a loose, well-draining soil and a sunny location.
• Regular weeding is essential for good crop development, especially early in the growing season.
• Water moderately at first, then only in severe drought conditions.

Diseases

• Onions are particularly susceptible to downy mildew.
• To prevent diseases:
  • Apply well-rotted compost.
  • Spray regularly with a horsetail plant extract.
• Onions need a light, loose, and fertile soil. Avoid wet conditions.

Harvesting

• Harvest from late July to September.
• To encourage ripening, bend the stems down in August to stop growth.
• After harvesting, let onions dry for 48 hours in the field (if dry weather), then store in a dry, well-ventilated place (e.g., hanging in bunches).
• Properly stored, onions can last several months.

Companion planting

• Good companions: Carrots (repel onion flies), tomatoes, beets, lettuce, and strawberries.
• Avoid: Nitrogen-fixing crops (e.g., legumes), as excess nitrogen affects storage quality.
