Tips for Planting and Growing Onions

✔ Soil and Location
Onions thrive best in loose, well-drained soil in a sunny location. If your soil is heavy and clay-like, consider planting in raised beds to improve drainage.

✔ Planting
Plant onions from late February to mid-April, or in autumn for varieties suitable for fall planting, such as the Shakespeare onion. Place them 2 to 3 cm deep, with 10 cm spacing between sets and 25 to 30 cm between rows. Ensure the tip is just above soil level. If the soil is dry at planting time, water lightly to break the dormancy of the bulbs.

✔ Maintenance
Keep the soil aerated by raking regularly, especially in clay soil. In open ground, watering is usually unnecessary unless there is a prolonged dry period. In protected environments, weekly watering is recommended.

✔ Harvesting and Storage
Harvest onions from late July to September. To encourage ripening, bend the stems around August to stop further growth. After harvesting, leave them to dry on the ground for about 48 hours in dry weather, then store them in a dry, well-ventilated area—hanging them is a great option. This way, they can be stored for several months.

✔ Companion Planting
Onions grow well alongside carrots (which help deter onion flies), as well as tomatoes, beets, lettuce, and strawberries. Avoid planting them near legumes or other nitrogen-fixing plants, as these can inhibit onion growth.

By following these tips, you’ll enjoy a healthy and abundant onion harvest!
