Product description

Pumpkin 'Melonnette Jespée de Vendée'

The Melonnette Jespée de Vendée is a historical French pumpkin variety known for its creeping growth and impressive productivity. This variety produces fruits resembling yellow-orange embroidered melons, with exceptionally sweet and flavorful flesh of excellent quality. It can be consumed both raw and cooked, making it a versatile addition to your garden and kitchen.

Growing Tips for the 'Melonnette Jespée de Vendée' Pumpkin

Sowing

Sow the seeds indoors in pots at a temperature of 20°C from March to April to speed up fruiting and reduce pest damage. After the last frost, typically around May 15th, transplant the seedlings outdoors. Ensure they are spaced at least 1 meter apart (up to 2 meters for creeping varieties). Plant in small holes filled with compost for optimal growth.

You can also sow directly into the ground in May, but keep in mind that the harvest will be later and less abundant.

Maintenance

Pumpkins, including the Melonnette Jespée de Vendée, require a sunny location and thrive in soil rich in organic matter. Regular and abundant watering is essential, especially during dry periods.

Pruning is not necessary but can help manage the plant.

Harvesting

Harvest your pumpkins at the end of the season when the leaves begin to wilt and the stem is dry. For better storage, harvest as late as possible but before the first frost.

Once harvested, leave the pumpkins outside for a day (protected from rain and frost) in the sun to allow the skin to dry. Afterward, store them indoors in a dry, well-ventilated area.

Tips for Successful Growing of 'Melonnette Jespée de Vendée' Pumpkin

  • Pumpkin seeds need a temperature of 20-22°C to germinate. They do not like excess moisture, as this can cause seedling rot.
  • Occasionally, a healthy plant may not produce fruit due to a lack of pollination. This can be due to a lack of pollinators. Try attracting insects to your garden by planting flowers that attract them.
  • Extreme heat can affect the production of female flowers and the quality of male flower pollen. Protect your pumpkin plants during very hot weather by mulching or providing shade.
