Growing Tips for Melon Petit Gris de Rennes
These selected varieties are particularly suited for the northern Loire, but melons need warmth. It is therefore recommended to plant them in a greenhouse or under a cloche.

Seed sowing for early growth:
In the north, sow in pots with 2 to 3 seeds, in a warm location (25°C) from March to June. Transplant in May-June in a greenhouse or under a cloche, with 1-meter spacing between plants.

Pinch back seedlings to 3-4 leaves, and also on side shoots. In the south, you can sow directly in the ground.

Melon Growing Conditions:

  • Sunny location: Melons need at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Choose a sunny spot in your garden for planting.
  • Soil preparation: Melons thrive best in soil rich in organic material. Add compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
  • Watering: Ensure regular watering for optimal melon growth. Deep watering once or twice a week is preferred, rather than frequent shallow watering.
  • Avoid spraying leaves: Avoid wetting the leaves as water left on the leaves can encourage fungal diseases.

Melon Care and Diseases:
Pinch the seedlings back to 3-4 leaves, and then to 3-4 leaves on the side branches to promote fruit growth.
Watch out for diseases like powdery mildew, Fusarium, Cladosporium, and anthracnose. Use natural fertilizers where possible and ensure good air circulation around the plants to prevent mold.

Melon Harvest:
Melons need around 70 to 100 days to ripen, depending on growing conditions. They are ripe when the skin is smooth, the fragrance is sweet, and the fruit makes a hollow sound when gently tapped.

Benefits of Melons:
Melons are not only delicious and refreshing but also provide various health benefits, such as hydration, antioxidants, and support for weight management.
