Product description

Belgian melon from Pajottenland - Organic Seeds

A traditional Belgian regional variety, Melon Belg from Pajottenland is an early-season melon with spherical, ribbed, smooth, dark green fruits that ripen to a golden ochre color. The orange flesh offers a rich flavor, though it is less sweet compared to a typical melon. This variety is a descendant of the “Noir des Carmes” melon, specifically adapted to Belgium’s cooler climate and the growing conditions in greenhouses. It was widely cultivated until the 1960s, before the mass introduction of the Cavaillon melon.

Growing Tips for Melon Belg from Pajottenland
The varieties selected in this catalog are ideal for northern regions like the Loire. However, melons require warmth to thrive, so it’s best to plant them in a greenhouse or under a cloche for optimal results.

Sowing Melon Seeds:
In the cooler northern regions, sow 2 to 3 seeds in pots, keeping them in a warm spot (around 25°C) from March to June. Transplant in May or June in a greenhouse or under a cloche, spacing them 1 meter apart.
If you live in warmer southern regions, you can sow directly into the ground.

Melon Cultivation Conditions:

  • Sunny Location: Melons require at least 6 hours of sunlight per day, so be sure to plant them in a sunny spot.
  • Soil Preparation: Melons grow best in soil rich in organic material. Improve your soil with compost or well-decomposed manure before planting.
  • Watering: Regular watering is essential for healthy melon growth. Deep water the plants once or twice a week, rather than frequent shallow waterings.
  • Avoid Wetting the Leaves: When watering, avoid wetting the leaves as this can promote the growth of fungal diseases.

Melon Care and Diseases:
Pinch back the plants when they have 3 to 4 leaves, and also on side shoots to encourage strong fruit production.
Watch for common diseases like powdery mildew, Fusarium, Cladosporium, and anthracnose. Consider using natural fertilizers to support plant health. It’s crucial to avoid spraying the leaves and ensure good air circulation to reduce the risk of disease.

Harvesting Melons:
The growing period for melons varies based on the type and growing conditions. Typically, melons require about 70 to 100 days to ripen after sowing.
Signs of ripeness include a smooth skin, a sweet fragrance, and a hollow sound when gently tapped.

Health Benefits of Melons:
Melons are not only delicious and refreshing but also offer a variety of health benefits. They are hydrating, packed with antioxidants, and can support healthy weight management.
