Product description

Rijspeul Heraut – Tender, Stringless Pods

The Rijspeul Heraut is the first variety with tender, stringless pods and round seeds. This climbing pea reaches a height of about 140 cm and produces a rich harvest.

How to Sow Rijspeul Heraut?

Sow directly into open ground in rows with 50 cm spacing. Place the seeds 2 cm deep and 2-3 cm apart. Alternatively, sow in small clusters for even germination.

Sowing and Harvesting Periods

  • Spring Varieties:

    • Round-seeded: Sow from March to late April → harvest after 70-80 days (June-July).
    • Round-seeded: Sow in July → harvest in October.
    • Wrinkled-seeded: Sow from mid-March to late May → harvest after 70-90 days (July-August).
    • Wrinkled-seeded: Sow in July → harvest in October.
    • If needed, cover with a tunnel (germination temperature: 15-18°C during the day, 7-10°C at night). Peas tolerate cold, and the leaves can withstand temperatures as low as -10°C.
  • Winter Varieties:

    • Sow in October → harvest from May.
    • Round-seeded varieties can also be sown in October-November for an early harvest in May (depending on climate).
    • Snow peas can be sown later than shelling peas, from April to June.

Care and Maintenance

  • Soil & Water: Prefers loose, moist, and deep soil. Water regularly, especially in the first weeks.
  • Weeding & Thinning: Thin seedlings to 20 cm apart.
  • Support: Hill up plants at 15 cm height and provide support with branches, trellises, or wire mesh.
  • Protection: Even bush varieties benefit from support to prevent rotting in wet conditions. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and freshness.

Harvesting

  • Snow Peas: Harvest 70-100 days after sowing.
  • Shelling Peas: Harvest when peas are fully developed, about three months after sowing.

Common Diseases and Pests

  • Powdery mildew: Avoid wetting the leaves when watering. Horsetail manure spray can be used preventively or curatively.
  • Slugs & Birds: Protect young plants from slugs and birds, especially during sowing.

Tips for a Successful Crop

  • A cold treatment or soaking seeds before sowing can enhance germination but is not essential.
  • Regular watering and mulching help maintain soil moisture and temperature.
