Product description

Golden Hubbard Squash

The Golden Hubbard Squash is a robust and productive squash plant that produces 3 to 5 fruits per plant, with an average weight of 2 to 5 kg per fruit. These squashes have a beautiful reddish-orange color, a warty skin, and are shaped like large double tops. The flesh is thick, dark orange in color, firm, and has an excellent flavor.

Growing Tips for the Golden Hubbard Squash

Sowing the Golden Hubbard Squash

Sow Golden Hubbard squash indoors in pots at a temperature of 20°C in March and April. This speeds up fruit formation and helps reduce damage from pests. After the last frost, around mid-May, transplant the seedlings into the ground, spacing them 1 meter apart (up to 2 meters for sprawling varieties). Make sure to plant the seedlings in small holes filled with compost to support the roots.

It is also possible to sow directly in the ground in May, but note that the harvest will be later and less abundant.

Caring for the Golden Hubbard Squash

Squashes require a sunny location and soil rich in organic material. During dry periods, be sure to water them regularly. Mulching can help retain moisture in the soil and protect the roots from extreme temperatures. Pruning is not necessary but can help keep the plant healthy.

Harvesting the Golden Hubbard Squash

Harvest the squashes at the end of the season, when the leaves wilt and the stem is dry. For better storage, it’s recommended to harvest them as late as possible, but always before the first frost. After harvesting, leave the squashes outside in the sun for a day (protected from rain and frost) so the skin can dry. Store them in a dry, well-ventilated place indoors.

Tips and Tricks from Semailles

Squash seeds need warmth (20-22°C) to germinate properly. They do not like excess moisture, as this can cause seedling rot.

It may happen that a healthy and blooming plant does not bear fruit. This can be due to a lack of pollination (for example, due to a shortage of pollinating insects). Try attracting pollinators by planting flowers that attract these insects. Another cause can be a lack of female flowers, often due to extreme heat, which affects both the production of female flowers and the quality of pollen from male flowers. During hot weather, protect your squash plants by mulching or providing shade.
