This pink spring garlic features a white bulb with pink-beige cloves and has excellent storage qualities.

1 bulb weighs approximately 30-40g.

Growing Instructions

Storage Before Planting

Store the garlic bulbs in a dry, cool, and dark place, protected from frost, until planting time.

Soil and Location

  • Sunny location: Garlic thrives in full sun. Choose a well-exposed spot in your garden.
  • Fertile, well-drained soil: Loose, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal. Avoid manure or nitrogen-rich fertilizers, as they may cause the bulbs to rot. If necessary, use an organic fertilizer rich in potassium and phosphorus.
  • Crop rotation: Avoid planting garlic in soil where garlic or other alliums have been grown in the past 2 to 3 years.
  • Tip: If your soil is too compact, consider creating a raised bed to improve drainage.

Planting

  • When to plant?
    • Winter garlic: Mid-October to mid-November.
    • Spring garlic: Late February to March.
  • How to plant?
    • Carefully separate the cloves, ensuring not to damage their skin.
    • Plant them with the pointed end up, spacing them 10 cm apart.
    • Cover with 2-3 cm of soil.
  • Tip: Select the largest cloves for planting, as they will produce the best yields. Use the smaller inner cloves for consumption.

Care

  • Moderate watering: Garlic does not require much water. Only water if there is prolonged drought during bulb formation (May).
  • Weeding: Garlic is low-maintenance but benefits from regular weeding.
  • Tip: In June, you can gently tie the leaves or lay them down using the back of a rake to encourage bulb growth. This is useful if the stems remain thick at the base.

Harvesting and Storage

  • When to harvest?
    • Winter garlic: Ready after approximately 8 months.
    • Spring garlic: Ready after 4 to 4.5 months.
    • When the leaves turn yellow and start to wither (usually June or July), it's time to harvest. Garlic can also be harvested young from April onwards.
  • Drying: Let the harvested garlic dry in a well-ventilated, dry place. In good weather, you can briefly leave the bulbs on the ground to dry.
  • Storage: Store garlic in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, such as a cellar or pantry. Avoid direct sunlight.
  • Tip: Braid the stems to hang them for easy winter storage.

Diseases and Pests

Garlic is generally disease-resistant but can be affected by white rot, downy mildew, and leek moth.

  • Tip: Garlic is a natural pest repellent and makes an excellent companion plant for other crops.
