Product description

Early Giant Leaf Spinach

This early and highly productive spinach variety can be harvested within 4 to 6 weeks after sowing. Perfect for early cultivation under protection starting from January or directly in the ground from mid-February to April. It can also be sown for a fall harvest.

Cultivation Advice for Early Giant Leaf Spinach

Sowing Spinach

  • Spring varieties: Sow in March-April.
  • Autumn varieties: Sow from August 15 to early September for a harvest in the fall (only harvest large leaves) and a second harvest in spring. Alternatively, sow from September 15 to October 15 for a spring harvest.
  • Sow directly in rows with 25 cm spacing.

Spinach Growing Conditions
Spinach grows best in well-worked, moist (but well-drained) soil rich in humus. Spinach is sensitive to drought and heat, which causes seed formation. Provide a relatively shaded location for spring cultivation.

  • Care: Thin out the seedlings to 5 cm when they have 4-5 leaves.
  • Watering: Regular and abundant watering is essential.

Harvesting Spinach

  • Spinach is ready to harvest about 2 months after sowing, except for winter varieties, which are harvested the following spring.
  • Regular and partial harvesting will encourage the growth of new shoots.

Spinach Diseases and Pests

Spinach is susceptible to fungal diseases like mildew. To prevent this:

  • Ensure crop rotation and good ventilation between plants.
  • Use natural remedies, such as nettle or horsetail teas (e.g., PurMel3), as a preventative measure.
  • Protect young spinach plants from slugs.

Spinach Combinations in the Garden

Spinach combines well with many vegetables, such as:

  • Beans, peas, broad beans, cabbage, radishes, garlic, onions, leeks, strawberries, etc.
Avoid planting next to tomatoes, beets, potatoes, Swiss chard, and peppers.

Health Benefits of Spinach

Spinach offers numerous health benefits. It is rich in essential vitamins and minerals such as:

  • Vitamins A, C, E, K, and minerals like iron and calcium.
  • It contains antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Semailles Tips

A cold treatment or week-long treatment can help with germination but is not necessary for a successful harvest.
