Product description

Cucumber Rollison's Telegraph – A Heirloom Variety with High Yield

The Cucumber Rollison's Telegraph is a historic variety that was already popular in England at the beginning of the 20th century. This cucumber produces long, cylindrical fruits of 30 to 40 cm with a smooth, white skin and firm flesh. Due to its low seed count and high productivity (6 to 8 fruits per plant), this variety is an excellent choice for both hobby gardeners and heritage variety enthusiasts.

Cultivation Advice for Cucumber Rollison's Telegraph

Sowing

Sow cucumbers indoors in pots from March to May. Once the seedlings are about 15 cm high and after the last frost, they can be transplanted into open ground with a spacing of 60 cm. In warmer climates, direct sowing in the open ground is also possible.

For cooler and more humid regions, shelter is recommended, but cucumbers can grow well outdoors in warm conditions. Keep in mind that the germination temperature should ideally be between 22 and 25°C.

Growing and Care

Cucumbers are heat- and sun-loving plants that thrive best in fertile, well-drained soil. Mix compost into the soil at planting for optimal growth.

  • Water regularly and abundantly, but avoid wetting the leaves to prevent fungal diseases.

  • Mulch around the plants to keep the soil moist and cool.

Harvesting

Cucumbers are ready for harvest after about 100 days. Pick the fruits every 3 to 4 days to encourage the plant to produce more. A healthy plant can yield between 5 and 10 cucumbers per season.

Diseases and Pests

Cucumbers can be susceptible to powdery mildew. Prevent issues by:

  • Practicing crop rotation;

  • Ensuring sufficient air circulation between plants;

  • Using plant extracts such as nettle and horsetail manure.

To combat aphids, plant nasturtiums nearby and treat infestations with black soap. Slugs can be controlled by pre-growing seedlings in pots and protecting them with eggshells or coffee grounds.

Companion Planting

Cucumbers grow well alongside corn, legumes, cabbage, onions, garlic, and dill. Avoid planting them near potatoes and other cucurbits.

Nutritional Value and Health Benefits

Cucumbers are hydrating and rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They make a delicious, refreshing addition to summer meals.

Handy Tips

Train cucumber plants to climb on a trellis or wire to save space and protect the fruits from contact with damp soil. This also helps to produce straight cucumbers.

With the Cucumber Rollison's Telegraph, you can enjoy a bountiful harvest and a delicious, crisp taste from your own garden!
