Product description

Crimson Clover

Crimson clover is a highly decorative annual legume with beautiful blood-red flowers. Not only is this clover a feast for the eyes, but it is also an excellent choice as a green manure. Like other legumes, crimson clover can fix nitrogen from the air through a symbiotic relationship with rhizobium bacteria. This process enriches the soil with nitrogen, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.

The deep roots of crimson clover, which can reach depths of over 40 cm, significantly improve soil structure. This increases soil porosity and water retention. Due to its rapid growth, crimson clover also serves as an effective ground cover, preventing the growth of unwanted weeds and protecting the soil from erosion. Additionally, its abundant vegetation contributes to soil enrichment by breaking down organic matter. This clover is also highly attractive to pollinators, making it a great choice for bees and other beneficial insects.

Crimson Clover Planting Tips

Sowing Crimson Clover
Sow crimson clover from April to late September in well-drained, loose soil. Plant the seeds about 1 cm deep and lightly cover them with soil. Press the soil down and water to promote germination. Maintain a spacing of about 20 cm between plants.

Growing and Maintaining Crimson Clover
Crimson clover thrives best in light, well-drained soils and requires minimal maintenance. It doesn’t need specific fertilization and grows well with little care, except for watering during extended dry periods.

With a life cycle of about 3 months, crimson clover offers beautiful blooms in spring, which are highly valued by various pollinators like bees. Mow the clover when the flowers begin to fade, just before they go to seed. This typically happens at the end of spring for a late summer sowing or at the end of summer for a spring sowing.

Post-Harvest Treatment and Soil Improvement
A few weeks after mowing, work the plant residues into the soil. This will help increase the humus content and improve soil fertility.
