Product description

Cosmos Orange: A Versatile Annual Flower for the Garden

The Cosmos orange (Cosmos sulphureus) is a stunning annual flower with lush foliage and numerous small yellow-orange blooms. This plant is a great addition to any border or cottage garden, thanks to its long summer bloom that lasts into the fall. Cosmos orange also makes an excellent cut flower, perfect for bouquets. Additionally, the flowers and young leaves are edible, and the plant is a favorite among bees and butterflies, making it a valuable honey plant. Note, Cosmos orange is not hardy and must be replanted each year.

Cultivation Tips for Cosmos Orange

  • Sowing: Sow the seeds of Cosmos orange indoors (minimum 20°C) from March to April in good seed or cutting compost. Once the seedlings have 4 leaves, transplant them into individual pots. Alternatively, you can sow the seeds directly in the desired spot in your garden from April to May. Ensure proper spacing between plants (40 cm) and rows (40 cm).

  • Planting and Transplanting: After the "Ice Saints" (mid-May), transplant the seedlings to a sunny, well-drained spot. Choose light, humus-rich soil. Space the plants 40 cm apart in both directions. If your garden is exposed to wind, it’s advisable to support the Cosmos orange to ensure sturdy growth.

  • Maintenance: Cosmos orange requires moderate watering daily. Ensure the soil isn’t too wet, as this can suffocate the roots. Other than that, maintaining a healthy plant is relatively easy, with occasional checks for diseases.

Harvesting and Use

The flowers and young leaves of Cosmos sulphureus are edible and will bring a subtle rose fragrance to your raw salads. They not only add flavor but also a colorful touch.

Harvesting Seeds

Harvest the flowers when they are dry and brown. Collect the seeds by gently tapping the flowers into a bucket. Be careful, as birds love Cosmos seeds and might beat you to the harvest if you're not quick!

This versatile and attractive plant is a must-have for gardeners looking for a cheerful addition to their garden or a flavorful variety for their salads.
