Product description

Mini Cucumber - Muismeloen: Fun and Unique Mini Cucumber Variety from Mexico

The Muismeloen (Mini Cucumber) is a delightful and unique variety of cucumber, highly productive and resistant to diseases. Originating from Mexico, this variety produces small, decorative fruits that are elongated, approximately 3 cm long, with a striped skin resembling mini-watermelons. These cucumbers are perfect for eating raw or pickling in vinegar, just like traditional gherkins.

Cultivation Advice for the Muismeloen (Mini Cucumber)

Sowing the Muismeloen

Sow the Muismeloen seeds indoors or in a greenhouse from March to May. After the last frost, when the seedlings reach about 15 cm in height, transplant them into the open ground, spacing them 60 cm apart in the row.

It is also possible to sow directly into the soil after the last frost. In colder and more humid regions, shelter is ideal, although cucumbers can also be grown in the open ground in warmer climates.

Note: Cucumbers have a relatively high germination temperature (between 22°C and 25°C) for optimal growth.

Cultivation Conditions

Cucumbers are tropical plants that require warmth to grow well. Plant them in a sunny location with rich, well-draining soil. Adding compost at planting time is beneficial for healthy growth.

Water regularly and abundantly throughout the summer, ensuring the leaves are not wetted to avoid fungal diseases. Mulching helps keep the soil cool and moist, promoting healthy growth.

Harvesting the Muismeloen

The cucumbers are ready to be harvested about 100 days after sowing. Harvest every 3 to 4 days to ensure freshness and quality. A plant can produce several cucumbers during the growing season.

Diseases and Pests in the Garden

Cucumbers are susceptible to powdery mildew, especially in humid conditions. To reduce risks, rotate crops, protect plants from excessive moisture, and ensure good air circulation. The preventive and curative use of plant extracts such as nettle and horsetail is recommended to control fungal issues.

Prevent aphid infestations by associating cucumbers with companion plants like nasturtiums. In case of an aphid attack, treat with black soap.

To minimize damage caused by slugs, sow cucumbers in pots or protect young plants with eggshells or coffee grounds.

Companion Plants for Cucumbers

Cucumbers thrive next to plants like corn, legumes, cabbage, onions, garlic, and dill. Avoid planting cucumbers near potatoes or other cucurbits, as this can negatively impact growth.

Health Benefits of Cucumbers

Cucumbers are rich in fiber, hydrating, and packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Their fresh, crisp texture makes them perfect for enjoying on warm summer days.

Tips and Tricks from Semailles

You can train cucumbers to limit the space they occupy. This will not only protect them from moisture in the soil but also encourage straight fruits, making harvesting easier.
