Product description

Chili Pepper Biquinho Yellow – A Flavorful Eye-Catcher

The Biquinho Yellow is a small, teardrop-shaped chili pepper with a striking yellow color. This elegant pepper adds a decorative touch to dishes and has a unique flavor profile, combining sweet, peppery, and fruity notes with almost no heat. Due to its long growing season, it is advisable to start sowing early.

Growing Tips for Chili Pepper Biquinho Yellow

Sowing and Seedling Care

Sow indoors in February or March at a constant temperature of at least 23-24°C. Maintain a warm, humid environment with sufficient light and regular watering. Some chili varieties require extra warmth for germination; if seeds do not sprout, increasing the temperature above 25°C may help.

Once the seedlings have 3-4 true leaves, transplant them into pots. After the last frost, they can be moved outdoors, preferably in a sheltered location. Similar to tomatoes, burying the stem up to the first leaf promotes root development.

In cooler regions, particularly north of the Loire, growing peppers in a greenhouse is ideal. Outdoor cultivation is possible if summers are warm and not too humid. Choose a sunny, well-ventilated spot along a wall.

Care and Growth

Peppers require well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Adding compost or well-rotted manure enhances soil fertility. Regular and consistent watering is crucial, as prolonged drought can negatively affect fruit growth and quality.

In northern regions, topping the main stem when the plant bears about ten fruits can help direct the plant’s energy towards ripening. Side branches carrying fruit can also be pruned to two leaves beyond the last fruit.

Some varieties grow tall and may need support. During the growing season, feeding with organic fertilizers or foliar sprays, such as diluted nettle manure (e.g., PurMel 3), is recommended.

Disease Prevention

Powdery mildew is one of the biggest threats to chili plants. To prevent it:

  • Practice crop rotation for a healthy soil balance.
  • Avoid wetting the leaves when watering.
  • Allow enough space between plants for good air circulation.
  • Regularly spray with nettle manure or horsetail decoction to strengthen resistance against fungal diseases.
  • Seaweed powders can also enhance plant resilience.
Harvesting

Peppers can be harvested from July to October, about 5-6 months after sowing. Green peppers can be picked while still growing but are only fully ripe when they stop increasing in size. Orange and red fruits should be harvested once they have completely changed color.

With proper care, the Biquinho Yellow will provide a bountiful harvest of decorative and delicious peppers!
