Tomato Black Cherry
The Christmas Tomato Black Cherry is a productive and robust variety that produces dark black fruits, the size of a large cherry. These tomatoes are known for their sweet flavor and excellent quality. As an early-ripening tomato with indeterminate growth, the Black Cherry is ideal for both gardening and culinary applications.
Why Choose Christmas Tomatoes?
Christmas tomatoes, such as the Black Cherry, are not only more productive and early-ripening but also less susceptible to diseases compared to larger varieties. They can easily be grown in pots and do not require additional support, especially the bush varieties. Thanks to their sweet taste, they are a favorite among children and the perfect ingredient for various dishes.
Growing Instructions for Christmas Tomato Black Cherry: Sowing, Transplanting, and Maintenance
Sow the seeds indoors at a constant temperature of at least 20°C, ideally 24°C, from mid-February to late March/early April (about 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting). Provide a warm, slightly humid environment and spray regularly with water to keep the seedlings healthy.
Transplant the seedlings into pots when they have 2 to 4 leaves. Keep them in a warm place (15-20°C). After April 15th, you can transplant the seedlings outside, with a spacing of 50 x 80 cm between plants. In colder regions, such as north of the Loire, it is ideal to grow the tomatoes under glass for protection. Outdoor cultivation is also possible, provided you choose a well-lit and well-ventilated location.
Maintenance and Disease Prevention for Christmas Tomatoes
Tomatoes, such as the Black Cherry, require a lot of warmth and organic matter, especially potassium (K), for healthy growth. When planting, bury the bottom half of the stem in the soil to stimulate root development.
Pruning: In northern regions, you can prune the plants lightly to prevent the leaves from touching the ground.
Watering: Water the plants regularly without wetting the leaves, as tomatoes are susceptible to mildew. It is preferable to use nettle manure or horsetail broth as a preventive measure against fungal diseases. Seaweed powder (lithothamne) can also be useful for promoting plant health.
Pur'Mel 3 Fertilizer: The ready-to-use Pur'Mel 3 fertilizer is particularly effective for the health of tomato plants. This fertilizer combines the power of nettle, comfrey, and horsetail. Dilute the fertilizer with 10% water as a preventive measure and spray the leaves every two weeks. In case of mildew infestations, dilute the fertilizer with 30% water and spray the leaves twice a week until the disease is gone.
Harvesting the Christmas Tomato Black Cherry
The Christmas Tomato Black Cherry ripens about 2 months after planting. A ripe tomato will fall easily from the plant. Pick them as soon as they are fully black for the best taste and quality.
