Celeriac Monarch – Vigorous and Winter-Hardy Variety

The Celeriac Monarch is a vigorous and mid-late variety, ideal for winter storage. The roots are neatly grouped beneath the well-rounded bulb, and the flesh is white and firm. This variety is highly valued by market gardeners for its excellent qualities and storage potential.

Growing Tips for Celeriac Monarch

Unlike celery, which is grown for its stalks or leaves, celeriac is cultivated for its tuberous root. Its flesh is firm, crunchy, and has a slightly sweet flavor.

Sowing
To successfully grow celeriac, it is essential to transplant twice.

Sow from February to April under a warm bed (15°-20°C). Lightly cover the seeds with potting soil, as they need light to germinate. Transplant the seedlings into a cold bed, in pots or trays, in April. After May 15th, transplant them into the ground with a spacing of 40 cm between plants.

Celeriac prefers a sunny position.

Care and Disease
All celery varieties require a warm location and soil rich in organic matter and phosphorus.

Keep the soil moist with regular watering. Mulching helps retain moisture in the soil.

Celeriac can be prone to diseases like Septoria. Ensure good air circulation around the plants and water at the base of the plants, preferably in the morning to prevent moisture from lingering on the leaves.

Harvesting
Celeriac is harvested from September to November.

For storage, pull the plants by the end of October, remove the leaves and excess roots, and store them in a cool cellar or silo.

Celeriac is low in calories and rich in fiber. It also contains vitamins like vitamin K, vitamin C, and vitamin A, as well as minerals like potassium.

Avoid planting celeriac in the same spot for 3 to 4 years.
