Product description

Yellow Cayenne Pepper – Growing Tips

This yellow Cayenne pepper is a hot variety (8/10 on the Scoville scale) that produces an abundant yield. The long, slender peppers grow to about 15–20 cm and turn yellow when fully ripe. They dry easily and are ideal for long-term storage.

Sowing Yellow Cayenne Pepper

Sow indoors between February and March at a constant temperature of at least 23-24°C.

Create a warm and humid environment with adequate light and regular watering. Some pepper varieties require more heat for germination. If seeds do not sprout, slightly increase the temperature (above 25°C) to encourage growth.

Once seedlings develop 3-4 true leaves, transplant them into pots. After the last frost, plant them in the ground, preferably in a sheltered location. Like tomatoes, you can bury the stem up to the first leaf to promote strong root development.

In cooler regions, such as north of the Loire, peppers grow best in a greenhouse. However, they can also be grown outdoors in a warm, well-ventilated spot, such as against a sunny wall, as long as the summer is not too humid.

Growing Yellow Cayenne Pepper

Peppers thrive in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Improve soil fertility by adding compost or well-rotted manure.

Keep the soil consistently moist with regular and even watering. Prolonged drought can negatively impact fruit development and quality.

In cooler climates, you can top the main stem once the plant bears around ten fruits. This helps the plant focus its energy on ripening existing fruits rather than producing new ones. Side shoots with fruit can be pruned to two leaves after the last fruit.

Some varieties grow tall and require support.

During the growing season, feed plants with organic fertilizers or foliar sprays such as diluted nettle manure (e.g., PurMel 3).

Preventing Diseases

Powdery mildew is a common threat to pepper plants. To prevent it:
✔ Rotate crops regularly to keep the soil balanced and fertile.
✔ Water carefully, avoiding wetting the leaves.
✔ Ensure adequate spacing between plants for good air circulation.
✔ Strengthen plants with nettle manure or horsetail decoction.
✔ Use seaweed powder as a natural protective measure.

Harvesting Yellow Cayenne Pepper

Harvest from July to October, around 5-6 months after sowing. Green peppers can be picked early, but they are fully ripe when they stop increasing in size. Orange and red peppers develop their best flavor when harvested at full maturity.
