Growing Guide for Romanesco Cauliflower

Sowing Instructions

Cauliflower thrives in rich, fresh, and slightly clayey soil with consistent moisture.

  • Location: Full sun in northern regions, partial shade in warmer areas.

  • Sowing period:

    • Summer and autumn varieties (e.g., Romanesco, Flora Blanca): Sow under cover from February to April.

    • Winter varieties (e.g., Cape Violet): Sow directly in the ground from April to July.

    • Spring varieties: Sow in autumn for harvesting the following spring.

Transplanting and Spacing

Once seedlings have 3-4 leaves, transplant them to their final growing position, spacing them 60-80 cm apart.

Care and Maintenance

  • Watering: Regular and abundant watering, especially in summer. Avoid wetting leaves to prevent mildew.

  • Mulching: Helps retain moisture and provides protection against cold.

  • Weeding: Keep the soil weed-free.

  • Earthing up: Improves plant stability.

  • Protecting the flower heads: Use large leaves to shield them from direct sunlight.

Harvesting and Storage

  • Harvest when the cauliflower head is well-formed and compact.

  • Storage: Consume immediately or keep in the refrigerator for 4-5 days. Blanch before freezing.

Diseases and Pests

  • Fungal infections: Prevent mildew with Bordeaux mixture.

  • Insects:

    • Cabbage white butterfly: Treat with wormwood extract or black soap solution.

    • Slugs and snails: Remove manually or use barriers.

    • Flea beetles: Keep the soil moist and use elderberry extract.

    • Cutworms: Regular hoeing and moisture retention help.

Companion Planting for Romanesco Cauliflower

  • Beneficial neighbors: Garlic, chives, shallots, and onions.

  • Cabbage fly protection: Use clover as a ground cover.

  • Aphid prevention: Alternate rows of cauliflower with green beans.
