Growing Advice for Broad Beans

Sow broad beans from February to April for a spring crop, or from October to November for an autumn crop. Sow directly in place, with 2-3 seeds per hole, in rows spaced 45 cm apart and at a depth of 3 cm.

Keep a spacing of 15 cm between plants in the row. When the stems reach 15 cm in height, earth up the plants for better stability. Harvest from June to August. Broad beans prefer cool, nutrient-rich, and moist soil.

For autumn sowing, cover the soil with leaves or use cloches in case of severe frost.

Tips for Successful Cultivation

• Pinch off the plant tops above the 5th or 6th flower group to speed up pod formation and prevent aphid infestations.
