Product description

Blue Hubbard Squash

The Blue Hubbard Squash is a vigorous, vining variety that produces 2 to 4 large fruits per plant, each weighing over 10 kg. The fruits are elongated, slightly ribbed, and blue-grey in color, with thick, yellow-orange flesh that is soft, slightly less sweet, but of excellent quality. This squash is perfect for puree, soup, soufflé, flan, and jam.

How to Grow Blue Hubbard Squash

🔹 Sowing: Start seeds indoors in pots at 20°C, from March-April, to speed up fruiting and reduce pest damage. After the last frost (around May 15th), transplant seedlings outdoors, spacing them 1 meter apart, or 2 meters apart for trailing varieties, in compost-enriched soil. You can also sow directly in May, but the harvest will be later and less abundant.

🔹 Care:

  • Requires a sunny location and nutrient-rich soil.
  • Ensure regular watering, especially during dry periods.
  • Mulching helps retain moisture and protects roots from extreme temperatures.
  • Pruning is optional, but it can help maintain plant health.

🔹 Harvesting:

  • Harvest at the end of the season, when leaves wither, and the stem feels dry.
  • For longer storage, harvest as late as possible, but always before the first frost.
  • Let the harvested squash dry in the sun for a day (protected from rain and frost) to harden the skin.
  • Store in a dry, well-ventilated place indoors.

Tips for a Successful Harvest

🌱 Germination: Seeds germinate best at 20-22°C. Avoid excessive watering, as it can cause rotting.
🐝 Pollination: A plant with no fruit may lack pollination. Attract pollinators by planting flowering plants nearby.
☀️ Heat protection: Extreme heat can hinder female flower production and reduce pollen quality. Use mulch or provide shade to protect your plants.
