Product description

Aubergine Ronde de Valence – Robust and Productive Round Eggplant

The Aubergine Ronde de Valence is a strong, productive variety that ripens slightly earlier than elongated eggplants. The large, dark purple round fruits have firm, white flesh and are ideal for various culinary preparations. This eggplant thrives in warm conditions and is suitable for both open-ground cultivation and greenhouse growing.

Growing Advice for Aubergine Ronde de Valence

Sowing

Eggplants require a lot of heat from germination to harvest. Sow indoors or in a heated greenhouse in February-March at a constant temperature of at least 23-24°C. Keep the environment warm, humid, and well-lit. Some eggplants require higher temperatures for germination. If seeds do not sprout, increase the temperature to 25°C or higher.

When the seedlings have 3-4 true leaves, transplant them into individual pots. After the last frost, plant them in a sunny, sheltered spot in open ground or a greenhouse, maintaining a 50 cm spacing.

In colder areas (north of the Loire), greenhouse cultivation is recommended.

Care

  • Soil: Ensure well-drained, nutrient-rich soil enriched with compost or well-rotted manure.

  • Watering: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Regular and even watering prevents growth stagnation and bitter fruits.

  • Pruning: Pinch side shoots and remove lower leaves to improve light penetration and stimulate fruit production.

Harvesting

Eggplants are ready for harvest when they are firm, shiny, and fully developed. Use a sharp knife or pruning shears and leave a small piece of the stem attached to the fruit. Regular harvesting encourages the plant to produce new fruits and prevents eggplants from becoming overripe and bitter.

Diseases and Prevention

Eggplants are susceptible to downy mildew, root rot, and verticillium wilt. Preventive measures:

  • Crop rotation to maintain healthy soil.

  • Keep leaves dry by watering at the base.

  • Maintain adequate spacing for good air circulation.

  • Use natural boosters like horsetail decoction and seaweed powder to strengthen plant resistance.

Nutritional Value and Benefits

Eggplants are low in calories and rich in essential nutrients such as fiber, vitamin K, C, B6, folate, and potassium. They also contain antioxidants (such as anthocyanins) that contribute to a healthy diet.

With the Aubergine Ronde de Valence, you choose a flavorful, versatile, and robust eggplant that is an asset both in the kitchen and the garden!
