Product description

Aubergine Imperial Black Beauty – Old Variety with a Deep, Glossy Color

The Aubergine Imperial Black Beauty is a classic, robust variety known for its deep, glossy dark purple to almost black skin. The fruits are medium to large, with a large, ribbed pear shape. They are not only visually attractive but also have a delicious taste, making them versatile in the kitchen.

Growing the Aubergine Imperial Black Beauty

Eggplants are heat-loving vegetables that require a long growing season, from sowing to harvest. Sow eggplant seeds in a warm place (with a constant temperature of at least 23-24°C) in February-March. Ensure a humid, well-lit environment for seed germination. Some eggplant varieties, like the Imperial Black Beauty, may require even higher temperatures to germinate well (up to above 25°C).

Transplant seedlings into small pots once they have 3-4 true leaves. Keep them in a warm location with sufficient light. After the last frost, transplant the seedlings into the ground, preferably under glass in cooler climates, such as in the northern Loire. Space the plants 50 cm apart.

Soil Requirements and Watering

Eggplants need well-drained, fertile soil that is rich in organic matter. Add compost or well-decomposed manure to improve soil fertility. Keep the soil moist, but avoid prolonged dryness, as it can affect growth and fruit quality. Regular, even watering is essential.

Maintenance and Harvesting

To increase yields, you can shorten the side shoots and remove the lower leaves of the eggplant plant. This improves light exposure for the fruits and promotes growth. Eggplants are ready to harvest when they reach full size and the skin is glossy and firm. Cut the fruit from the plant with a sharp knife, leaving a part of the stem attached. Regular harvesting encourages the plant to continue producing fruit.

Disease Prevention

Eggplants can be susceptible to diseases such as powdery mildew, root rot, and wilt. To prevent powdery mildew, you can take the following measures:

  • Crop Rotation: Make sure not to plant eggplants in the same spot every year.
  • Watering: Avoid wetting the leaves when watering.
  • Air Circulation: Space plants sufficiently apart to promote air circulation.
  • Preventive Spraying: Use natural remedies like nettle puree or fern decoction to prevent fungal diseases. Seaweed powder can also serve as a plant booster.

With the Aubergine Imperial Black Beauty, you choose a traditional and flavorful variety that is easy to grow and produces promising yields. Whether you use the fruits in the kitchen for a variety of dishes or enjoy them fresh from the garden, this eggplant is a must-have in your garden.
